Coins, Veil and Cords
Coins, veil and cord are important elements in a Filipino Roman Catholic wedding. These three additional wedding rites were introduced by the Spaniards to the Philippines.
The use of wedding coin or arrhae symbolizes prosperity as the grooms makes a promise to support and provide for his new family. There are 13 wedding coins which symbolizes Jesus Christ and his 12 apostles. In addition, the odd number 13 cannot be divided equally which said to mean that the couple should stay together amidst the odds.

Typically wedding coins are heirlooms, passed down through generations. Exclusive shops offer unity coins in gold, silver and combination of two (gold and silver) or popularly known as two tone. Unity coins are sold for one set which costs php1,200.00 to php2,500.00.

Lastly, the cord is placed over the couples’ shoulder in a figure “8” shape as a symbol of bond, protection and everlasting love. Cords are usually made of silk.
